Samsung Unveils ATIV Q Windows 8/Android Hybrid Tablet

Samsung unveiled its latest tablet offerings last night. They include the ATIV Tab 3 Windows 8 tablet, which the company claims is the world’s thinnest; and the ATIV Q, which runs both Windows 8 and Android OSs. Asus launched a similar hybrid device a couple of weeks ago, and some analysts believe there is sound logic in combining Windows’ Office productivity tools with the greater choice of apps available on Android.

“We’re committed to offering our customers choice and convenience in personal computing, and the convertible nature of both these new tablets delivers the freedom and versatility our customers demand” said Simon Stanford, vice president of Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland’s IT & Mobile Division. “These innovative devices have been designed with busy people in mind, and the adaptability they offer is better suited to busy lives than any tablet on the market.”

The ATIV Q works as a notebook or tablet, running both Windows 8 and Android Jellybean 4.2.2 on the same device. It has a 13.3-inch screen, a 128GB SSD hard disc and 720-pixel HD camera. It weighs in at 1.29kg.

It can be used with the display laid flat over the keyboard in tablet mode; with the display raised upright laptop in laptop mode; with the display “floated” and adjusted the display to a more comfortable viewing angle; or with the display flipped in stand mode to watch movies. The display is a high-resolution QHD+ (3200×1800), with a pixel density of 275ppi (pixels per inch) – 2.8 times that of full HD displays.

The ATIV Tab 3 has a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 HD display, 64GB hard disc, 720-pixel HD camera. It tips the scales at just 550g, and is only 8.2 millimetres thick. Both tablets will be available to buy in the UK from selected retailers “later this year”.Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy NX last night. This is a camera running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and also boasting interchangeable lenses and 4G connectivity. The Galaxy NX will be available in the summer.
