An iconic tourist destination and symbol of the future from the Age of Space 1962 Worlds Fair, Seattles famous Space Needle has updated what it can offer visitors with a new mobile app that includes augmented reality.
The app, designed by Fuerte International, will serve as a guide and memory book to the Space Needle, which reaches 520 feet above the city. It will help visitors locate and learn about the key sights in town and share a look at historical events, as well as its AR capabilities.
On ground level, visitors can use the apps augmented reality viewer at special Space Spots, enabling them to view the Space Needle surrounded by fireworks, surrounded by Jetsons-style space ships or even blasting off into the sky. On the upper floors, the AR allows visitors to peer through the floor of the Observation Deck at the city below, or into the Sky City restaurant on the floor below.
In addition to the app, the Space Needle has introduced a 20 by 8 digital touchscreen display, which enables tourists to view thousands of photos of visits to the Space Needle, from its launch up to today, as well as posting their own photos and adding their hometown to a digital globe.
“One of the greatest aspect of this project has been the local partnerships that made these experiences possible,” said Karen Olson, vice president of marketing at Space Needle. “Microsoft technology played an integral role, as did several top creative and interactive development agencies.
“We pushed beyond what we thought was possible to offer our guests, and locals alike, experiences that are totally unique, memorable, and shareable. Were heightening our guests ability to discover Seattle with new experiences that deliver more interaction, insights, connections, smiles and wow.”
