Shutterstock adds AR feature to app

Shutterstock ARStock photography company Shutterstock has launched its first augmented reality (AR) feature, enabling users to use their phone’s camera to see how an image would look in real-life.

The ‘View in Room’ feature leverages Apple’s iOS ARKit to create the experience. Customers with iPhones are able to position any of Shutterstock’s 250m images against a wall in any room to get an idea of how the image would look before putting it up in their home, office, or other spaces. The size of the image can be adjusted accordingly.

“We have been committed to experimenting with cutting-edge technologies for over 15 years. After years of advancing our in-house computer vision technology to enhance search capabilities on web and mobile, we are very excited to announce our first AR-powered mobile viewing experience for customers,” said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. “This is yet another great project to have been developed from its initial iteration at our annual employee hackathon, Hack to the Future. We decided to put this hack into production because of its potential to have an immediate customer impact.”

The feature is available via the ‘View in Room’ button on the Shutterstock Customer iOS app.

Last month, Shutterstock made an update to its Contributor app, which saw it add in-app contributor registaration in 21 languages.
