Sky News Arabia Launches on Mobile

Sky News Arabia, the independent Arabic-language news channel, broadcasting 24-hour rolling news to 50m homes in the Middle East and N. Africa, has launched a smartphone app for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia devices.

The app, developed by Grapple Mobile, includes news, photos, videos, and the ability to share stories via social media. Additional features such as live streaming will be released over the next few months. Within 96 hours of launching, the app occupied the No.1 spot in the Apple App Store News category throughout Jordan, UAE and Qatar.

Grapple worked closely with Sky News Arabia, a joint venture between Abu
Dhabi Media Investment Corporation (ADMIC) and BSkyB, on the development of the app. Thair Soukar, deputy head of digital at Sky News Arabia, says: “We know that there is a huge appetite for an Arab news product which incorporates both the technological advancements and the rapidly changing media consumption habits that are transforming the way in which news is gathered and disseminated. Sky News Arabia aims to deliver fresh, fast and independent news via multiple platforms including mobile devices to provide fast news on the go.”
