Sky has penned a deal with Netflix that will see the TV and film streaming service included as part of a new Sky TV subscription bundle.
The partnership will make Netflix available via the Sky Q platform to new and existing customers. Netflix will be integrated directly into Sky Q, meaning content from the streaming service will appear alongside Sky content rather than in a separate app.
“The exciting new features coming to Sky Q will enable Sky customers to access even more of the best entertainment delivered over the best product platform,” said Jeremy Darroch, group chief executive at Sky. “By placing Sky and Netflix content side-by-side, along with programmes from the likes of HBO, Showtime, Fox and Disney, we are making the entertainment experience even easier and simpler for our customers.”
Sky has not revealed how much the package will cost or when it can be expected to arrive, but it will launch on Sky Q in the UK and Ireland first before launching in Germany, Austria, and Italy.
The agreement will also see Sky launch Netflix as a standalone app on its Now TV streaming devices in the UK and Ireland. The app will be introduced to Sky Ticket in Germany and Austria, and Now TV in Italy, following that.
On top of the deal with Netflix, Sky has also agreed a partnership with Spotify. This deal will see the music streaming service arrive on Sky Q in the UK and Ireland this spring.
“Were delighted that consumers in the UK and Ireland will soon have another means to listen to all the music and podcasts they love on Spotify via Sky Q,” said Jorge Espinel, VP of business development at Spotify. “The partnership between Spotify and Sky will offer consumers the chance to enjoy great entertainment from two leading media brands, and we are excited for what the future of the partnership may bring.”
