Smartphone Subscribers Prefer Wi-fi, says Mobidia

Wi-fi data consumption is double that of cellular connections on mobile, according to research from Mobidia, and analyst Informa. Across the 600 worldwide mobile operators sampled, 91 per cent used wi-fi for data usage purpose, accounting for 70 per cent of all smartphone-originated traffic.
“We were quite surprised with the findings,” says Mobidia VP marketing, Chris Hill. “Not only did we find that data usage on smartphones was much higher than the typical 100-500 megabytes average monthly usage that is often cited, but also that wi-fi usage often outpaced mobile usage – by as much as six-to-one in some countries.”
