Smartphone shipments reached 230m in Q2, 2013, according to Juniper Research – representing a year-on-year growth of 50 per cent, and quarter-on-quarter growth of 13 per cent.
Samsung accounted for 31 per cent of this figure, with an estimated 72m smartphones shipped over the period.
iPhones made up 13 per cent of all shipments, meanwhile, at 31m units – a figure which actually dropped 17 per cent quarter-on-quarter. According to Juniper, if Apple wants to stay successful, it needs to live up to CEO Tim Cooks promise of “amazing new products” this autumn and next year, and start innovating.
The quarter also saw LG posting its highest ever smartphone sales, with 12m units shipped – a year-on-year growth of 114 per cent.
Whereas this research shows that global sales have grown 50 per cent in the last year, in the UK they have slowed to 10 per cent, according to exclusive data from GfK.
