Researchers at the University of Birmingham have discovered an algorithm for predicting smartphone users future movements based on analysis of their mobile data usage – including location data, call history and sent texts.
Using the technology, the researchers have found that they can predict an individuals probable location, down to 20 metres, 24 hours in advance.
“In a world dominated by social networks and always-connected mobile devices, the potential applications of our study are many, in particular for marketing, advertising, and personalised services,” says research Manlio de Domenico. “If a system is able to predict with reasonable accuracy where the user is directed, it could provide geo-localised and personalised recommendations based on his or her future movement.”
It sounds a bit spooky, and pressure groups are understandably worried about privacy issues. But the applications for advertisers arent too difficult to imagine – not just location-based targeting, but next location-based, with ads recommending restaurants where youll be tomorrow lunchtime, and pushing offers for shops youll be walking past on the way home.
