South Korea Orders Apple and Google to Improve App Refund Policies

App Stores Apple iOS vs Google Play AndroidSouth Korea’s Fair Trade Commission has ordered Google and Apple to revise the no-refund policies for their app stories, the Korea Herald reports.

The current refund process once a consumer has bought an app is rather convoluted on both stores. The App Store requires refund applications to be submitted through a series of menus in iTunes, which then Apple reviews on a case-by-case basis. Googles Play Store offers a 15-minute window after purchase during which a full refund is available, after which the user has to contact the developer directly.

Both companies will introduce new refund systems for South Korean consumers. The Fair Trade Commission says it expects this decision to have a knock-on effect in other countries, and Apple is apparently considering applying its changes on a global basis.
