Giving smaller merchants the opportunity to take payments on mobile devices is great, but trying to swipe a card on top of a tablet while handling goods isnt always the most practical arrangement.
Its presumably for this reason that mobile POS company Square has unveiled Square Stand, a piece of hardware thats intended to turn an iPad with Square Register into something more closely resembling a traditional till.
The Stand contains an integrated card reader, and can be secured to a countertop to lock the iPad in place. It can also be connected to common accessories, such as receipt printers, cash drawers, and barcode scanners.
It costs $299, and is available from retailers, including Best Buy, in the US. It works with the iPad 2 and 3, with a Lightning connector-compatible version promised later this year.
