Sri Lanka Gets 3G Coverage with Google Loon

Google Project LoonGoogle Loon has signed up its first customer: the nation of Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan government signed an agreement with Google to provide the entire country with 3G internet via its stratospheric balloons, reports Lanka Business Online.

13 balloons will be installed over Sri Lanka in the coming months, each of which is expected to last 100 days.

“As a result of this agreement, the entire Sri Lankan island – every village from Dondra to Point Pedro – will be covered with affordable high speed internet using Google Loon’s balloon technology,” said Sri Lankan Foreign, Telecommunications and IT Minister Mangala Samaraweera.
