The BBC is Feeling Arty on Snapchat

The BBC is using Snapchat as part of a campaign to inspire Snapchat artists and get millennials involved in its new show, Big Painting Challenge.

The show, produced by BBC Studios, is putting ten amateur contestants through a six-week artistic boot-camp, leading to the eventual crowning of a Big Painting Challenge winner.

Each week a Snapchat artist will set an artistic challenge on BBC One’s Snapchat account and provide tips on how to pull it off on the multimedia messaging platform. These Snapchat artists include @TurbanChino, @mplatco, and @geeohsnap.

This week San Francisco-based professional Snapchat artist @TristanTales challenged followers to create art that people can interact with.

He said: “Snapchat art isn’t about creating a masterpiece – it’s about getting creative with the world around you. It’s fast, fun and easy to do, so there’s no reason not to get involved and start creating your own little works of art.”

The BBC is sharing the best selection of ‘selfie-portraits, digital doodles and mobile masterpieces’ in a dedicated public gallery.

The show’s mentors, Diana Ali and Pascal Anson, believe Snapchat is just another medium that can be used by artists to express themselves.

Snapchat is bold, colourful and exaggerates the world we see,” said Ali. “We live in a fast world where we often miss the beauties of life. Take a minute and capture something that we walk past every day, such as tops of buildings, cloud formations or interesting textures in the urban world. Make them into bold and colourful images to help us notice what we miss! Enjoy and look beyond the obvious.”
