US indie rock band The National has teamed up with the New York Times to create a VR experience, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the band as they write songs for their next album, as well as footage of one of their live shows.
The documentary, entitled ‘The National: Something Out of Nothing’, cuts between the band writing for Sleep Well Beast – their seventh studio album – from their Hudson Valley, New York recording studio and a live onstage performance at Haven Festival, Copenhagen, Denmark.
The footage is directed by Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Marshall Curry, who picked up his prestigious Oscar nomination in 2005 for his look at the hard-hitting 2002 Newark, New Jersey mayoral elections in Street Fight.
The experience is available to watch on the Times’ site or through the NYT VR app, available via the Play Store, App Store or Oculus for Gear VR.
The VR documentary comes ahead of The National’s upcoming 11-date UK tour, which begins in Cork, Ireland and ends in London, is completely sold out. The band will close out the year playing shows across North America and the rest of Europe.
