News International has launched an iPad app for The Sun newspaper. The Sun for iPad was developed in conjunction with Mobile Interactive Group company Jigsaw, and costs £4.99 for a 28-day subscription.
It gives readers access to the e-Paper – a virtual on-screen edition of the UK’s best selling daily newspaper – and the new iEdition of the paper, which automatically updates with breaking news content from thesun.co.uk.
A Sun spokesperson says: “A tabloid on a tablet – this is what the iPad was made for. It’s a cracking app that replicates The Sun experience, wherever you are. Our readers will get the same paper they know and love – with added bells and whistles, such as the interactive Sun View feature and breaking news on the iEdition.”
With the e-Paper, readers will be able to navigate through pages with the interactive Sun View feature at the bottom of the screen, zoom in on text and images and read text-only versions of stories. Readers can also access the i-Edition which will include all the additional features and entertainment content currently available through The Sun’s website.
Given The Suns sometimes racy content, particularly on page 3, some might say its done well to get the app past Apples famously strict approval process. The newspapers next challenge will be to secure repeat purchases at a fiver a month.
