The Times Launches Mobile-only Party Conference Site

The Times’ digital team has created a mobile-only party conference companion that launched at the Labour Party conference at the weekend.

The mobile site curates live tweets and articles written by The Times’ journalists during the three main party conferences, along with tweets from politicians, specialist publications and other commentators. You can clear out even more of the chaff by using the star in the top right hand corner to find top news. It also links back to Twitter so you can share the content you see.

People who do not have a subscription to The Times can sign up to the site for free, presumably they will use the data to send follow up emails to get more people to subscribe. If you are an iOS user, you are directed to bookmark the site on your homescreen before you sign up, a smart way to put it front of mind during the conference season.

Joseph Stashko, digital news development editor at The Times,  spoke to Mobile Marketing about the papers decision to build a mobile site, or a web app, as his team describes it. “We created a web app because we wanted something simple that was quickly available on a variety of devices without having to build native apps for each platform. We chose mobile-only simply because itll be the most common device carried by those at this years party conferences. The view was, at this stage, to make it as simple as possible so we can use it to build in more functionality for future events.”
