Network operator Tigo is bringing its Tigo Music service to Africa, bundling an unlimited music streaming service with more than 30m songs as part of pre-paid data plans.
The Tigo Music service, which will be launched in Ghana in Q4 2014, has already been a great success in Latin America, with 600,000 subscribers signed up. The service has emerged as one of the largest sources of digital revenues in the music industry in Columbia.
Tigos parent company, Millicom, has also formed a partnership with Africori, one of Africas leading digital music companies, to fund, acquire and manage music rights through Africa Music Rights, which Millicom will be contributing a large portion of the initial investment to.
African Music Rights (AMR) will serve the whole continent, where 70 per cent of music consumed is locally-produced, and will invest in rights directly from artists, writers, micro-labels and others in key areas such as South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.
“Africas digital music market is taking off fast with online and mobile penetration growing strongly,” said Hans-Holger Albrecht, CEO and president of Millicom. “Tigo Music gives us a first-mover advantage, reinforces our strategic shift from voice to data and extends the digital lifestyle.
“AMR complements this by exploiting the huge opportunity to serve the rising demand for digital music across the continent. Together they make Millicom a music powerhouse for Africa.”
