TikTok has announced that its short-form video app is now used by more than 100m people across Europe every month, as its future in the US continues to be unclear.
News of the app’s Europe milestone comes a week after it launched its biggest UK ad campaign to date and over a month after it announced its ‘European Creator Fund’, which is aimed at nurturing and promoting talent across Europe.
“We've been humbled to see how Europe has embraced TikTok during the time we've been here,” said Rich Waterworth, Europe General Manager at TikTok. “Since we first established our presence in Europe, we've taken a localised approach and sought to become part of the fabric of society here. This is reflected in the incredible wealth of local content and trends emerging on TikTok.”
Despite the positive news in Europe, it is still not completely clear if the popular app has found a suitor to take over its US operations.
Long-time frontrunner Microsoft has revealed in a statement that ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has rejected its offer to the apps US business. Alongside this, reports suggest that Oracle has been chosen as TikTok’s ‘technology partner’, though we still can’t be sure what this will mean for Oracle’s role within the TikTok’s US operations or if the Trump administration will give the deal the green light. This ongoing saga may have a few more twists and turns yet.
