TikTok, a hugely popular social video app, has introduced an initiative aimed at helping users to stay safe when using its app. The launch comes following the news that it has crossed the 1bn installs mark.
Rather than out a lengthy, unengaging safety guide, the company has chosen to release a series of videos, aimed at being both fun and educational, providing users with useful information about guidelines and tools. Each video in the ‘You’re in Control’ series features popular TikTok users and all the in-app editing effects you expect from videos on the platform.
Topics covered by the video series include community guidelines, how to enable a private account, enabling comment controls, turning on messaging controls, setting screen time limits, opting for restricted viewing, and supporting the community.
“Creating a positive community on TikTok requires a multifaceted approach that involves policies, settings and controls, technology, moderation, and more, but we believe this step towards more accessible user education is just as valuable,” said TikTok in a blog post. “With ‘You’re in Control’, we hope you’ll feel inspired to use the tools at your disposal and take a deeper look into our privacy and safety resources in our Safety Center. This series is just one approach in our ongoing efforts to understand and listen deeply to the community and their needs as we strive to keep the TikTok community positive and supportive.”
The initial seven videos have begun rolling out on the TikTok app in the US and UK. The company says it will continue to introduce more tutorials to promote online safety.
