There has long been speculation surrounding what Apple has been working on in regards to self-driving, many believing the tech giant has been working on its very own self-driving car prototype. This, however, doesn’t seem to be the case – as made clear by Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Speaking to Bloomberg in an interview, Cook said that Apple was focused on building self-driving tech rather than building vehicles themselves, at least for the time being.
“We’re focusing on autonomous systems. Clearly, one purpose of autonomous systems is self-driving cars. We see it as the mother of all AI projects. It’s probably one of the most difficult AI projects actually to work on,” said Cook
“Autonomy is something that’s incredibly exciting for us but we’ll see where it takes us. We’re not really saying, from a product point of view, what we will do. But we are being straightforward that it’s a core technology that we view as very important.”
The Apple CEO also pointed out that self-driving tech has other uses outside of autonomous vehicles that make the tech so important.
“I think there is a major disruption looming there, not only for self-driving cars, but also for the electrification piece,” he said. “If you’ve driven an all-electric car, it’s actually a marvellous experience. And it’s a marvellous experience not to stop at the filling station, the gas station, whatever you want to call it. Plus, you have ride-sharing on top of this. So, you’ve got three vectors of change happening generally in the same timeframe.”
