Turkcell Launches SIM-based Mobile Wallet

Turkcell, a Turkish mobile operator, has launched a SIM-based mobile wallet for feature phones, with a native app for smartphones that enables contactless payments on NFC handsets.

Customers can pay for online shopping at participating websites by entering their mobile number, without the need for a bank account. Turkcell plans to integrate this at the point-of-sale in physical stores. NFC handset users will be able to make contactless payments at specified points.

“Turkcell Wallet will open the door to a new era in shopping and e-commerce as an inventive commercial platform where all of Turkey’s leading brands and banks will be available,” said Sureyya Ciliv, Turkcell CEO .

Turkcells 28m subscribers will also be able to transfer money using the app, top up their phones and eventually pay Turkcell invoices and utility bills. 

The wallet uses Mastarcards sercure payment infrastructure.
