twitter nfl streamingTwitter has launched a new video streaming application for Apple TV, Microsofts Xbox One and Amazon TV ahead of live-streaming the first of the 10 NFL games it has obtained streaming rights for.

While the NFL games have been the impetus for the creation of the app, it will also feature video content from a variety of Twitter partners including the NBA, MLB and Bloomberg News, as well as curated tweets and short-form video from its Vine and Periscope services.

“These devices will bring Twitters live-streaming video experience to life on the TV screen” said Anthony Noto, chief financial officer for Twitter. “Twitter has always been a great complement to TV, and now fans can enjoy even more premium video with live Tweets — and the best content on Twitter — right from their TVs. Were excited to introduce this new experience to people, without requiring a paywall or having to log in to Twitter.”

The Amazon TV version of the app is only available in the US and UK, while the Xbox One version will also be available to users in Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. The Apple TV version is available globally.

The application will be available to users without a Twitter account or a pay-TV subscription, with Twitter clearly hoping that as many people as possible are encouraged to sign up for its social network after using the app.

By reducing the barriers to entry for new users, Twitter is hoping to provide a boost to its sluggish user growth which has led many experts to speculate about the platforms future. Following the announcement, shares of Twitter were up nearly 3 per cent in early trading.
