Twitter is making further changes in order to clean up its platform, announcing that it will be purging locked accounts from the follower counts of all users around the world.

As a result of the change, Twitter says most users will see a drop of four followers or fewer, while those with larger followings are likely to experience a significant decline.

Accounts are locked by Twitter if the firm detects sudden changes in account behaviour. These changes can include tweeting a large number of unsolicited replies or mentions, tweeting misleading links, or if a large number of accounts block the account after mentioning them. In addition, an account may be locked if email and password combinations from other services are posted online and Twitter believes that there may be a security risk. While locked, accounts are not able to tweet or see ads.

Twitter says the removal of locked accounts will not have an impact on its reported monthly active user or daily active user metrics.

The microblogging site’s announcement follows the news that it suspended over 70m suspected fake accounts in May and June.
