Twitter has begun rolling out the streaming of live, local news broadcasts next to its timeline during major breaking news events – such as yesterday’s shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
The microblogging site will rely on partnerships with local news stations to select footage for the initiative, which is being introduced around the US.
“Were continuing to work on new ways we can surface credible and relevant information to help people stay informed. By pairing live video with the conversation on Twitter, there is no faster way to see what’s happening in the world,” Twitter’s video general manager Kayvon Beykpour told BuzzFeed News in confirming the roll out.
Twitter got the initiative up and running with the streaming of hours of video from Miami’s WSVN 7 next to the timelines of users in the US, as the station was covering yesterday’s school shooting.
The initiative differs from the approach taken by Facebook, which has moved to deprioritise news in favour of more social interaction. Although, slightly similarly, the news that does appear will more often be from local publishers rather than the bigger publisher names.
