Twitter Tries to Address Harassment Problems with Notification Filters

twitter on twitterTwitter has introduced two features intended to deal with the social networks harassment problem.

The sites Notifications tab – which shows all forms of engagement with a users account, likes and retweets to replies and @ mentions of their username – now has a filters menu, where users can narrow down what type of responses they see.

The quality filter feature – which Twitter started testing last year – promises to get rid of any lower-quality content. That includes accounts that appear to be automated bots, duplicate tweets, and others based on a variety of signals, such as account origin and behavior. Whether this includes accounts which have been reported as offensive, or any other signals of a Twitter troll, remains to be seen.

This filter wont remove any responses from accounts the user follows, or any theyve recently interacted with.

For more stringent filtering, however, Twitter is also offering an only people you follow option. This lets users choose to see notifications only from those accounts they already follow – meaning responses from strangers, which are unsurprisingly the most common source of harassment, will be filtered out entirely.
