Twitter has posted its financial results for Q4 2015, reporting revenues of $710m ($627m) and losses of $90m, both improvements on last year – but the most important figure it announced was a drop in user numbers.
Monthly active users (MAUs) stood at 320m in Q4, a slight decline on the previous quarter-over-quarter. In its earnings letter to shareholders, Twitter said “weve already seen January monthly actives bounce back to Q3 levels” but its not an encouraging precedent, especially given the user backlash over recent changes to Twitters timeline.
Mobile continued to be a bright spot, though, making up around 80 per cent of MAUs and 86 per cent of Twitters total ad revenues.
Overall, ad revenues grew by 48 per cent year-on-year, with video ads growing more than twice as fast – but the company admitted that growth of app install ads “slowed meaningfully” in Q4.
