Twitters latest rule changes will clampdown on hate, violence and nudity

TwitterTwitter has outlined its latest rule changes that will address unwanted sexual advances, non-consensual nudity, hate symbols, violent groups, and violence on its platform.

In an email sent out to the members of its Trust and Safety council – which was with safety advocates, community groups, academics and researchers to fight against abuse – Twitter’s head of safety policy, John Starr, compared Twitter’s current approach to its updated one in the areas of non-consensual nudity and unwanted sexual advances. In addition, Starr wrote about the introduction of entirely new rules around hate symbols and imagery, violent groups, and tweets that glorify violence.

The email, which was obtained by Wired, followed a series of tweets from Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey where he addressed the changes that have been implemented over the past two years not being enough to fix the problem and, as a result, the decision “to take a more aggressive stance in our rules and how we enforce them”.

“We realise that a more aggressive policy and enforcement approach will result in the removal of more content from our service,” wrote Starr in the email. “We are comfortable making this decision, assuming that we will only be removing abusive content that violates our rules.”

Changes to be made in the coming weeks include the immediate and permanent suspension of anybody identified as sharing non-consensual nudity, expanding the definition to include upskirt imagery, ‘creep shots’, and hidden camera content; making it clearer that unwanted sexual advances are unacceptable; hateful imagery and hate symbols, for the time being, are now considered as sensitive media like adult content and graphic violence; taking enforcement action against organisations that use, or have used, violence to advance their cause; and clamping down on any tweets that glorify or condone violent acts.
