Digital music platform 7digital saw its mobile reach increase by 277 per cent during 2012, with mobile accounting for 67 per cent of its music sales. Thats up from 50 per cent at the end of last year.
Overall, the ratio for track to album sales was 3:8, compared to the industry average of 6:7. Given that the majority of sales came from mobile, its interesting to see that users arent just snacking on content (tracks) on their devices, as you might expect, in favour of more long-form content (albums).
“The increasing availability of 4G and high speed mobile connections, coupled with the increasing number of devices and services, means connected devices will continue to be a growth area in 2013,” said 7digital CEO Ben Drury. “Music fans have a much bigger choice in how they purchase digital music today. As well as download, radio and streaming there is also the options of access: free, rental through subscriptions, and purchase.”
7digitals Android app was also downloaded 1m times over Q4, 2012, bringing the running total to 4.3m.
