68 per cent of internet usage will be on mobile this year, rising to 79 per cent by 2018.
Thats according to a report from Zenith, which also found that, of the 60 markets surveyed, Spain has the highest proportion of mobile internet usage at 85 per cent. In second place is Hong Kong (79 per cent), followed by China (76 per cent) and the US (74 per cent).
By 2018, Hong Kong will rise to the top spot, with 89 per cent of internet use coming from mobile devices, followed by China (87 per cent).
The highest smartphone penetration, however, is in Ireland – a position it will retain for the next two years (92 per cent in 2016, 94 per cent in 2018), followed by Singapore (91 per cent) and Spain (88 per cent).
The report notes that tablet penetration varies hugely between countries. While the level of penetration is over 50 per cent in a sixth of the markets surveyed, just three per cent of people in China, and six per cent in India, currently have tablets. Given that these two countries account for over half of the population surveyed, that drags the total figure down drastically.
