Uber is testing an electric bike sharing service

Uber Jump bike sharingUber is going to begin trialling a bike sharing service enabling its app users to rent out one of 250 dockless electric bikes.

From next week, Uber riders in San Francisco will be able to find and book pedal assist electric bikes from within the Uber app. The bikes are not being supplied by Uber itself but instead through a partnership with bike sharing company Jump.

Not all riders in San Francisco will have access to the pilot. Riders interested in taking part are required to sign-up to a waiting list in the hopes of hearing back from Uber that a spot is available in the pilot.

Those selected just have to tap the ‘bike’ option in the app’s menu and select a nearby available bike to reserve. Once done with a bike, riders can lock the bike to any public rack within a bike zone shown on the app’s map.

“Having a greater variety of transportation modes at your fingertips helps make it increasingly easy to live life without a car,” said Andrew Salzberg, head of transportation policy and research at Uber. “We’re particularly excited about bikes because they can provide a convenient, environmentally friendly ride even in dense cities where space is limited and roads can be congested. While it’s just one small step, pilots like Uber Bike by JUMP can add up to major progress, and we can’t wait to see how it goes.”

Uber isn’t the only ride hailing firm dipping its toes into the bike sharing world. In China, Didi Chuxing – which owns Uber’s China division – integrated the services of Bluegogo and Ofo to introduce bike sharing to its app.
