Ubinav Takes Blackberry EMEA Super Apps Honours

UbiNav EU has been named the EMEA winner in the third annual BlackBerry Partners Fund Super Apps Developer Challenge.

Developed by Ubiest, the app turns a BlackBerry into a reliable GPS mapping solution, with real-time turn-by-turn spoken and onscreen navigation instructions. Using the app, they can find, map, navigate to, or call over 10m businesses listed in the UbiNav database.

Ubinav beat off stiff competition from two other finalists to win the award. CamCard is a business card reader based on IntSigs OCR (optical character recognition) technologies. It helps users turn piles of business cards into BlackBerry Contacts with just a few clicks. The second finalist, n-tv mobil, delivers  news and videos to BlackBerry smartphones.

The N. American award went to another location-based app, Poynt, while Vlingo took the honours in Latin America for its Vlingo Plus voice control app, and Love Indonesia took the Asia Pacific award for its Love Indonesia city guides app.

Applications in this year’s BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge were judged on quality, user experience and how effectively they incorporated Super App characteristics which take advantage of the BlackBerry Application Platform. This enables  developers to build apps that seamlessly share information and interact with core BlackBerry or other third party apps. These are personalised and contextualised and can integrate with a BlackBerry’s inbox, calendar, address book and other native BlackBerry apps.

The total prize fund for this year’s Challenge was over $1.5m. There’s more information, including  full details of other regional winners, here.
