Smartphone penetration in the US rose to 58 per cent during the three month period ending March 2013, according to data from the comScore MobiLens service. Thats a total 136.7m smartphone owners – an increase of nine per cent from December 2012.
Not much has changed on the manufacturer and platform fronts, with Android still holding the majority OS share, and Apple retaining its position as the single most popular OEM.
Apple did actually strengthen its position significantly during the period, however, growing its share by 2.7 percentage points to 39 per cent. This came at least partially at the expense of Android, which saw its market share fall 1.4 per cent to 52 per cent.
Of the Android-focused manufacturers which make up the rest of the top five behind Apple, only Samsung saw growth – up 0.7 per cent to 21.7 per cent, holding second place. HTC (down 1.2 per cent to 9.0 per cent), Motorola (down 0.6 per cent to 8.5 per cent), and LG (down 0.3 per cent to 6.8 per cent) all held their previous positions in the list, but lost market share.
