US mobile network operator Verizon has committed to field trials of 5G technology in 2016.
The MNO is partnering with a number of telcos and mobile tech firms, including Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung, in order to begin trials next year.
The technology is currently being tested in 5G sandbox network environments at Verizon’s Massachusetts and San Francisco Innovation Centers.
“5G is no longer a dream of the distant future,” said Roger Gurnani, Verizon executive VP and chief information and technology architect. “We feel a tremendous sense of urgency to push forward on 5G and mobilise the ecosystem by collaborating with industry leaders and developers to usher in a new generation of innovation.”
Verizon claims 5G networks will allow for around 50 times the throughput of 4G, and a reduction in latency down to single milliseconds.
