Verizon Communications is looking to partner with Google or Apple to provide TV services when it launches the first 5G service to homes in Los Angeles and Sacramento later this year, Bloomberg reports.
Citing “a person familiar with the situation”, Bloomberg said, however, that according to its source, negotiations are ongoing and could still fall apart.
Verizon is expected to update its 5G rollout plans when it reports second-quarter results today.
The company plans to deliver services over 5G at speeds faster than a landline connection, eventually competing with established cable and landline providers. At an investor conference in May, CFO Matt Ellis said any partnership might only run until the company was comfortable providing its own internet-based video service.
But as the Bloomberg report notes, Verizon has not enjoyed much success with its TV efforts to date. It shuttered its go90 service last month after just over two and a half years, and also shelved a live online TV offering earlier this year.
