Virgin Mobile has launched a data tariff offering contyract and non-contract customers access to the mobile web and other data services for a flat fee of 30p per day. The company has also revamped its Virgin Media-branded web portal.
Virgin claims the 30p daily charge is up to three times cheaper than most other networks. While this is true when compared to the 1 per day pay-as-you-go data tariffs from T-Mobile, Vodafone, and O2 – 3 charges 50p, Orange 2, or 1.50 for contract customers at around 9 per month, the Virgin deal is more expensive than the 5-per-month flat-rate tariffs offered by T-Mobile, Vodafone and 3 (O2 charges 7.50). The Virgin deal is capped at 25Mb per day, after which, the cost is 2 per megabyte.
As handsets get smarter and faster, mobile web usage has increased significantly and more customers than ever are using their handset to connect them to the Internet when theyre not at home, says Virgin Mobile Managing Director, Graeme Oxby. By providing unlimited access at a highly competitive rate, we are giving all our customers the opportunity to use the Internet on their phone, without having to worry about racking up huge bills or working out complicated price structures.
The enhanced portal will focus on music, video and games downloads, plus editorial content focused on news, sports, music, entertainment, TV and movies. It will also include Yahoo!s mobile search service, Yahoo! oneSearch.
To introduce the new mobile portal to customers, Virgin Media has secured exclusive interviews with the Leona Lewis, Mark Wahlberg and Kanye West, among others. The storefront component will allow customers to buy full track music, ringtones, videos, games, pictures and animations. Virgin Mobile has confirmed more than 150 content partners, including Sony BMG, Sony Pictures, Disney, Universal, Glu and EA.
