Vodafone posted pre-tax profits of £8.7bn for the year ended 31 March 2010, more than double the previous year’s figure of £4.2bn.
The figures were helped by a strong performance in Asia Pacific and the Middle East, though it suffered in some more mature markets, including the UK, where revenues fell by 4.7 per cent.
The company was also hit by increased competition in India, where it suffered a £2.3bn impairment charge after the award of six new national licences in the market, one year after Vodafone’s entry, led to intense price competition.
On a brighter note, the company’s data revenues exceeded £4bn for the first time, up 19.3 per cent on the prevous year. Vodafone says it now has more than 50m active data users.
