Vodafone and China Mobile Bid on Telco Licence in Myanmar

Vodafone and China Mobile have partnered to form a consortium to bid for a mobile telecommunications licence in Myanmar, the Southeast Asian country also known as Burma.

The deal anticipates a period of rapid structural expansion in Myanmar, as the government seeks to increase the number of licences for mobile operators from two to four. If their submitted application is successful, Vodafone and China Mobile will be authorised to build and operate their own network on a nation basis, for an initial period of 15 years.

Mobile phone penetration is currently below 10 per cent in the country, significantly lower than in many other emerging economies, making it a valuable opportunity for telcos looking to grow their global presence.
