Want Your App to Make a Million, Fast? Dont Go Freemium

Of the top 250 publishers in the US iPhone App Store, only two per cent are new publishers, according to a Distimo report – a number that rises slightly to three per cent for Android. And their share of revenue is even lower – with new publishers taking 1.2 per cent of total revenue on Android, and just 0.25 per cent on iPhone.

The data was tracked using Distimos AppIQ between October 2012 and January 2013 on the App Store and Google Play.

The report also looked at how long it takes the most successful apps to hit the 1m download mark. The fastest to hit the milestone between October and January was Temple Run 2, followed by Google Maps and puzzle game Line Pop – all three of which hit 1m downloads within a day. With each apps downloads broken down by country, the US unsurprisingly emerged as the top contributor – making up as much as 45 per cent of downloads in the case of Google Maps. Line Pop was an exception to this rule, with Japan accounting for 87 per cent of downloads.

However, comparing this list with the apps which hit $1m in revenues fastest, the picture is rather different. Temple Run 2 falls to third place, while Line Pop rounds out the list in 10th place – the only two free apps on the list, depending on their in-app purchases.

These were the only free-to-download apps in the top 10, with two incarnations of Angry Birds Star Wars – which are both paid downloads, supported by in-app purchases – taking the top spots.
