Welsh company Blu has unveiled what it calls a groundbreaking communication system which is says takes the concept of information on the go to a new level. The system, also called Blu, is a mobile phone-based personal navigation system, allowing people to navigate and source local information while on the move without the need for maps or guidebooks.
The patented communication system works by using Blu information points placed in participating areas, which house Bluetooth technology to send information direct to mobile phones within a radius of approximately 350 metres.
Anyone entering a Blu zone with the Bluetooth facility on their mobile phone activated is sent a message to the mobile phone asking if they want to access Blu to find out more information on attractions and venues in the surrounding area.
If they agree, a vast amount of information on the local area is available immediately at the touch of a button and completely free of charge.
As well as basic listings of local restaurants, shops, pubs and entertainment venues, information is also available on the nearest emergency services, alongside detailed maps of the area, all sent direct to the users phone.
A network of only 40 points would cover the main streets of Cardiff city centre in Wales, and three venues in the City have signed up for Blu – the Red Dragon Centre in Cardiff Bay, Cardiff International Bus Station and Chapter Arts Centre.
A network of points can be designed for any location and can even be tailored for any type of event, such as the latest updates from music festivals or football fans receiving replays of goals in Blu zone stadiums.
Other applications include the ability to promote special discounts in a shopping centre, local tourist information, traffic information and weather warnings.
The system also has a unique way of providing the general public with information. For example, the police could use Blu to send out requests for information on crimes committed in a certain area, or in public areas, such as large shopping centres, parks and sporting venues, the police or venue security could circulate a description and even a photo of a missing child quickly.
Inventor Trevor Baylis was on hand for the launch of the system in Cardiff and said:
Mobile phones and the Internet have revolutionised the way that people communicate and this new technology is the next step. The Blu system is such an exciting new development because it has the potential to revolutionise how we gather information on our surroundings, as well as changing how businesses and services can communicate with the public. With most people owning a Bluetooth mobile phone, without doubt this is the most convenient way to receive local information in todays fast moving world and Im delighted that the idea came from three Welsh men, keeping the inventor spirit alive in Wales.
