Mobile device management solutions company SmartTrust has released the results of a survey that reveals what UK consumers want from their mobile phone. The results show that the three most desired features on a phone are, in descending order, good design, a camera and long battery life.
When asked about using their phone for accessing the mobile Internet, 54% of respondents said the cost was presently too much. 22% said they had no idea of cost, but were put off because they believed it would be expensive.
Most people currently using mobile applications said they were being charged either by the number of times they use an application, or per kilobyte or data packet. Only 9% are charged a fixed sum for unlimited use, yet 47% said they would like their operator to charge them this way.
Respondents were also asked if they would be interested in watching streamed TV programmes and movies on their mobiles. Among female respondents, the most desired Mobile TV content was movies, followed by music, dramas, sitcoms and documentaries. For males, it was movies, followed by news, sports, sitcoms and music.
Respondents were also asked which company would be their preferred provider for a future converged mobile device. Sony was the first choice, followed by Nokia and Sony Ericsson. Palm and RIM, which already offer converged devices, came in 6th and 7th place respectively, behind Microsoft, Apple and Samsung. When respondents were asked why they chose who they chose, the top reason was because they trusted the companys brand.
When respondents were asked which company could best provide the future converged device as part of a package that would include the device itself, software, application, wireless connections and supporting customer services, however, Microsoft came first, with 20% of the vote. Sony was second with 17%, and Nokia third with 13%. Sony Ericsson, Apple and HP occupied the remaining three places.
The five most important features for a future converged device, in descending order, were give as a long battery life, high-resolution camera and video camera, 20GB of memory, full MS Office functionality, and VoIP capability.
The results are based on a study of 411 UK consumers surveyed on SmartTrusts behalf by research company TNS.
