What You (may have) Missed – Part 8

Its June, and with the World Cup approaching fast, a lot of the excitement in the mobile space this past month has been around football, not surprisingly. And mobile network 3  has once again been at the heart of things, with its announcement that it would offer its World Cup programming, which will include made-for-mobile TV shows and fast-turnaround match highlights, free of charge to its customers.
Also getting in on the footie act were software company mxData, which launched a World Cup wall chart for mobiles, and blogging network Shiny Media, which announced it was teaming up with Mobizine producer Refresh Media to produce four Germany 2006 World Cup mobile blogs, which will be available to view on the majority of UK mobiles from 8 June.
If footballs not your thing, how about music? There was lots going on there too in the mobile space last month. O2 announced that its customers would be able to view footage of girl band Sugababes  doing whatever it is girl bands do all day, the footage shot by the girls themselves on a Nokia N90 handset. Meanwhile, mobile applications company Sennari launched MobileTunes, a free promotional tool that enables bands to bring music-oriented content to fans via their mobiles. But the best news of all, by a long chalk, was Virgin Mobiles decision to re-run a promotion it ran last summer in which it sent free beer and kebabs to customers phones. We know what youre thinking, and youre right, to do that literally would require a much fatter pipe than 3G or even HSDPA can provide, so for the moment, the promotion relies on a mobile coupon and ActiveMedia RAPOS redemption terminals, but who knows, maybe in 10 years time theyll figure out a way to send the real thing to your handset.
Elsewhere, Warner Music, Bango and 3 were among the winners at the Mobile Entertainment Forums  Meffy Awards, and not one but two mobile photo competitions were launched. Enpocket is running the first on behalf of drinks brand Robinsons at this years Wimbledon tennis tournament, while Incentivated  is running one for the Mayor of London to promote the Rise: London United  free music festival in July.
Finally, the most innovative product launch of the month came from Finnish company Tracker,  which unveiled My Way, a GPS navigation system that works on a mobile phone and can even be used to keep tabs on the whereabouts of your dog. Clever stuff.
