Whats on the Cards for Google Wallet?

Google has announced plans to expand the features of its mobile wallet, beyond card payments. Google is apparently in talks with airlines to bring tickets and boarding cards to Google Wallet, as well as other forms of public transport, and even ID cards.

“We want it to be an electronic wallet that holds all your payment cards, loyalty cards, gift cards, but also other types of digital objects — things that you have in your physical wallet today,” said Robin Dua, head of product management on Google Wallet, in a developers Q&A video session. “Things like identification, as an example, or the transit pass that you use every day – also boarding passes, and other forms of loyalty.”

Location-based services are also apparently in the works, which could see Google Wallet automatically pick the relevant loyalty card for a retailer, based on the users geo-location data.

Theres currently no word on when the service will become available outside of the US – nor when these changes can be expected to roll out, but they would bring Google Wallet closer in line with Apples forthcoming Passbook app for iOS 6, which functions as a mobile wallet for loyalty cards and tickets – and, with rumours currently circulating that the iPhone 5 will feature an NFC chip, most likely payments too.

Thats particularly interesting given that Dua mentioned that Google wants to push its Wallet, which is currently available on six Android devices, out onto every NFC-enabled device – including, presumably, any NFC-ready iPhones.
