WhatsApps monthly active users count has hit a record 400m – of which, 100m came in the last four months alone.
According to the announcement, WhatsApp is the only mobile messaging service to manage the feat, but it can be difficult to compare these kinds of services, as they all use different metrics – something WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum has spoken out against.
“We want to steer the conversation to be about active users, not registered users,” Koum told AllThingsD. “We’re a bit fed up and frustrated about people talking about registered users. We think it’s important for us as a leader in the space to speak up and be ethical.”
