WhatsApp Hits 27bn Messages Processed in One Day

OTT messaging app WhatsApp has reached a record 27bn messages processed within 24 hours.

That splits down into 10bn messages sent, and 17bn received. The discrepancy is due to group chat, meaning users send their messages to an average 1.7 recipients.

The last time WhatsApp announced it had processed a record-breaking number of messages was New Years Eve, which saw a total of 18bn messages.

Theres plenty of competition in the OTT messaging market – new kid on the block MessageMe has an even wider range of functionality, while old favourite BBM is making the jump to iOS and Android later this year – but for now, WhatsApp is still king.

CEO Jan Koum has revealed the app has more active monthly users than Twitter – thats over 200m – and Apple recently named WhatsApp as the most downloaded paid app ever on iOS.
