Over-the-top messaging service WhatsApp has hit the milestone of 10bn daily messages.
According to a tweet from the company, yesterday saw a new record, of 4bn outbound messages sent, and 6bn messages received on its app.
WhatsApp uses subscribers data connections to offer free cross-platform messaging – along with rich attachments including images, videos and location data.
OTT services such as WhatsApp have been placed as damaging to operators, as SMS revenues decline – but WhatsApp insists it encourages mobile data usage, currently looking to be the most lucrative potential market for operators.
