WIN Anti-smoking Campaign Aims for 100,000

Mobile enabler WIN is working with The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation on a campaign which aims to get 100,000 people in the UK to quit smoking on 1 July.
The campaign, which launched yesterday, is spearheaded by friend and colleague of the late Roy Castle, Cheryl Baker. It encourages smokers to kick the habit, and in doing so, set the world record for the most people taking the decision to give up in one day.
Those wishing to take part simply text I QUIT to 82222, and by return, receive a text message which urges them to seek support through the QUIT helpline on 0800 002200. Quitters will be further supported via a text message from the Foundation at the end of July to find out how they are doing in their attempt. All texts cost 25p, with 12p going to The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.
Additionally. Cheryl Baker is recording a new version of the famous Record Breakers theme tune and the Dedication song, which will be available as a ringtone by texting BREAKER or DEDICATION followed by either MONO, POLY or REAL to 84222 from 27 June. The ringtones will be available as either monophonic, polyphonic or realtones, each costing 2, of which more than 1 will go to the Foundation.
WIN is providing all the infrastructure for the campaign, including delivery, processing and handling all text messages and ringtones.
It was 20 years ago when I used to present Record Breakers with my friend Roy Castle says Cheryl Baker. He died from lung cancer due to passive smoking, and many would say it was Roy who first brought the risks of second-hand smoke to the attention of the general public. I cannot think of a more fitting testimony to Roy for the charity that has his name than to be encouraging all these people to quit smoking. I wish them all the best of luck in this initiative, which could save thousands of lives.
WIN CEO Graham Rivers adds:
Mobile is an ideal platform to run a campaign such as this, due to its personal nature and the convenience and ease with which the public can seek support and donate funds. We are very pleased to be supporting such a good cause, and wish The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation every success in its record attempt.
The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the only charity in the UK dedicated to fighting lung cancer. The charity runs smoking cessation services, and works with young people through KATS (Kids Against Tobacco Smoke) and ATYC (Anti-Tobacco Youth Campaign) to educate young people about the dangers of smoking.
You can get further information about the campaign and how to give up smoking here. Lloydspharmacy is working with the charity to provide support for smokers giving up. Information in available from all pharmacies, and smokers can also sign a pledge card promising to give up.
