US celebrity publication PEOPLE Magazine has created an iPad version of the publication, using the new version 1.4 of WoodWing´s Digital Magazine Tools software.
WoodWings says the iPad app “almost certainly offers the highest degree of interactivity seen in an iPad app yet”. Hotspots are used extensively to show additional content such as text and images. The new version of WoodWing´s Digital Magazine Tools also allows for one or more scrollable areas on a page, enabling the designers to integrate additional content in a reader-friendly manner. One example is the visual table of contents, teasing the stories in an appealing fashion.
The app makes heavy use of the new navigation features offered by WoodWing´s Digital Magazine Tools V1.4. A two-finger swipe switches to the next story instead of just the next page. A graphical page flipper with a scrubber and large thumbnails allow for easy orientation. Tapping on the outer edge on the left and right of a page moves backward or forward. When the bottom toolbar is visible, an icon in the upper left corner of the screen enables the reader to open a scrollable vertical table of contents.
Movie trailers and song samples are available to view and hear, while e-commerce options are integrated in book and music reviews, enabling the reader to immediately buy the reviewed book or album directly from within the app.
Subscribers of the printed issue of PEOPLE Magazine can access the iPad editions for free. Other readers can buy single issues via iTunes. The WoodWing Reader app is able to handle both models.
“The PEOPLE Magazine app pushes iPad publishing to a new level, setting a new standard for the industry,” says WoodWing president, Erik Schut. “We are delighted to be able to support PEOPLE Magazine with our Digital Magazine Tools to create such a stunning app.”
WoodWing´s Digital Magazine Tools for iPad support Adobe CS4 and CS5 and are in use by many renowned newspaper and magazine publishers worldwide. A continuously updated list of iPad apps created with WoodWing´s Digital Magazine solution is available here.
