Chinese electronics company Xiaomi is making its move into the North American market with the release of its Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4X smartphones in Mexico.
The Redmi Note 4 starts at a price of Mex$5,499 (£222) and will be available for purchase from Best Buy, Coppel and Sam’s Club stores at the end of May. Meanwhile, the Redmi 4X will start at Mex$3,999 but Xiaomi is yet to announce when and where this device will go on sale in the Latin American nation.
“Mexico is a really important market for us and acts as our starting point to reach the rest of Latin America,” said Donovan Sung, director of product management and marketing for Xiaomi Global. “We hope to continue growing our presence here with the constant support of our passionate Mi fans.”
In addition to the release of the two devices, Xiaomi has also announced it would be bringing its community Android app to fans in Mexico. Mi Community LATAM will enable Xiaomi’s Mexican fans to connect with the company, and other fans, as well as giving them access up-to-date information on new launches, and access to special events, offers and products.
A push into the Americas isn’t new for Xiaomi. It previously sold devices in Mexico through third parties, and it already sells devices in Brazil. Furthermore, its devices briefly appeared on the US market last year – though it turned out the mobile virtual network operator selling Xiaomi’s devices had no deal in place with the company and the devices were swiftly removed from the site.
