YouTube is working on bringing in new customers to its paid subscription service around the world by creating scripted series and other original programming.
According to Reuters, the Alphabet-owned video sharing platform will introduce content in the form of music documentaries, reality series, talk shows, and scripted series to international markets including France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and India.
“We are targeting markets where we believe we have a tremendous upside in potential subscribers,” Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original programming, told Reuters.
Some of the new slate of programming will appear on YouTube Premium, its monthly subscription service which replaced YouTube Red, while other pieces of content will be available on YouTube’s free service with ads. YouTube has promised there will be more details released in the coming weeks.
Despite introducing content from a variety of genres, YouTube has no plans to introduce more original children’s programming because it doesn’t believe this type of content will drive subscriptions around the globe.
