oxfamMobile payment company Zapp has announced it is working with the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and Oxfam to enable supporters to donate in new ways using their mobile phones.

Zapp will work with CAF and Oxfam, exploring ways for donors to make secure, quick and simple donations using their mobile devices and existing bank accounts, starting by enabling users of Zapps banking app to easily donate to charities.

Smartphones and tablets are increasingly popular as a way of donating to non-profit organisations, with a 22 per cent increase in the number of people who prefer to give via text message over any other method.

Zapps partnerships with HSBC, First Direct, Santander, Nationwide and Metro Bank mean that a third of all UK bank accounts are soon to Zapp-enabled, opening up a huge user base that charities can access.

“We are delighted to be one of the first charities to sign up with Zapp and offer this payment method,” said John Low, chief executive of the CAF. “At CAF we are keen to embrace innovation and believe Zapp will offer more choice for donors and make donating to charity even simpler.”

“Were really proud to be doing our bit and working with CAF and Oxfam to bring the benefits of mobile payments to the charity sector,” said Peter Keenan, chief executive of Zapp. “Were confident Zapp can make giving even more convenient for consumers and lower the cost to charities of receiving and processing donations, while boosting donations at the same time.”
