7.1m consumer M2M devices with cellular connectivity were shipped in 2011, according to a report from Berg Insight, up from 6.4m the year before.
Berg forecasts that shipments of the devices will grow at a CAGR of 39.8 per cent, to reach 37.9m in 2016.
“There are already 12.7m consumer M2M devices in use worldwide,” says Johan Svanberg, Senior Analyst, Berg Insight. “In a not too distant future, a substantial part of all content and services will be delivered through mobile channels. All companies – from device vendors, content owners to service providers – need to prepare for this change and have a well thought out mobile strategy in order to stay relevant.”
The growth of consumer M2M devices, which include eReaders, navigation devices, MP3 players, and handheld games consoles, will be driven by rising consumer awareness, decreasing component prices, and deployment of high speed cellular networks.
